Alviso Youth Center

This 2,337 S.F. education, gymnasium, classroom, and community service facility project was a joint-use partnership between the City of San Jose and the Santa Clara Unified School District. The sponsor of the project was Coucilperson Margie Matthews. The design challenge was to provide a facility that could be shared by the Alviso community and the Mayne Elementary School community and meet the program requirements of both. There were two challenges to be resolved. The first was the melding of the community park site where the new community was to be located with the school site. The center was located to be a bridge between the park and the school site providing a connection between the community and the school. The second challenge was to provide a facility that would serve the school program and the City's community service program requirements. The successful development of the dual program was facilitated by interactive work sessions involving the users and administrators of the new facility.
